Concrete Floor Resurfacing: Step-By-Step Process

While concrete is an extremely durable and tough material, it still is subject to wear and tear over an extended period. Concrete resurfacing is the process of making old concrete new again.

Over the existing surface, a coating gets applied, which can provide a new pattern, color, or texture. For example, concrete floor resurfacing can get done on patios, pool decks, and indoor floors.

No matter where you are trying to have your concrete floor resurfaced, the process is generally about the same. The process typically includes four steps.

These steps include cleaning the concrete, patching the spalled areas, spreading the resurfacing, and finishing off with a trowel operation. In this article, we will look at these steps in more detail so you can understand what the process of concrete resurfacing looks like.

Concrete Floor Resurfacing: Step-By-Step Process

Step 1: Cleaning The Concrete

The first step in concrete floor resurfacing is cleaning the concrete. Next, the floor or surface area where the work will get performed will need to get cleaned from any dust, residue, or algae that is on the floor’s surface. Usually, the surface of the floor will get cleaned with a pressure washer of 3500 psi or greater, being held about 8 inches above the ground.

Step 2: Patching The Spalled Areas

Before the resurfacer can get applied, you will need to check to see if any damaged patches are present on the surface of the floor. If patches are present, they must get filled up prior to resurfacing. The resurfacing material is mixed in with one part water and seven parts resurfacer, usually in a 5-gallon bucket. The material is then mixed with a paddle mixer and poured over to fill in the patch.

Step 3: Spreading The Resurfacer

Following the successful repair of the patches, the floor will then need to get resurfaced. You will need to ensure that the joints and gaps on the floor are getting filled up correctly with weather stripping, so the resurfacer doesn’t get into the joints and gaps. Then you will spread the resurfacer on the floor and spread it evenly throughout. The resurfacer will dry within ten to fifteen minutes before losing its workability.

Step 4: Trowel Operation

After successfully pouring and spreading the resurfacer, a trowel will get used to ensure the resurfacer comes out even. The weatherstrips will then get removed, and the resurfacer will dry out for the next 6 to 7 hours.
